Natural gas is odorless. They add smelly stuff to it, so if there is a leak you smell it. If a pipe leaks underground, the ground sometimes filters (takes away) the smelly stuff. It can accumulate in your house with nobody knowing. Then all it takes is a spark, to ignite it and BOOM.
